How to Select the Right Garage Door
It is little wonder that homeowners are confused when it comes to selecting the best garage door for their home. First, it is not a purchase many homeowners have to make unless they are building a new home or renovating an older home that needs a new garage door.

The first consideration is material. Garage doors are available in wood, steel, and high-density polyethylene. Steel is the popular choice for its strength, durability and low maintenance. Most steel doors, however, do not offer a lot of insulation so if you want to heat your garage, you may wish to select another material. Check steel thickness and paint finish. Many steel doors have a polyester finish so they can be painted if you want to change the color.
High-density polyethylene won’t dent or rust as steel doors do. They won’t fade so never need painting or begin to look dated.
Wooden doors look opulent—when new—but don’t provide the strength or durability of steel. They also fade, crack, rot and need repainting.
Your garage door, like your entry door gives a first impression of your home. So, it is an important purchase. Style, maintenance and ease of use should all be considered. You want a garage door which has a style that complements your house. Wooden doors typically have the most stylish appearance and design. Steel doors have different painted designs. Faux wood cladding doors are strong and durable, heat resistant and won’t fade but have all the stylish appearance of wood. They are also insulated. Canopy garage doors come in any material. They are quaint and match some house styles. However, they open outward and this may present a space issue.
If you have a double car garage, you need to consider one double door or two garage doors. One is cheaper but it is larger and may have difficulties with garage door openers and with snow and ice making it stick. Whichever option you choose, never measure and order your garage door without the consultation of the person who will be installing it. He/she is a professional and knows how to measure and install accurately.
Once you have chosen a material that complements your house and a color that complements the entry décor of your home and you have selected a style that fits your house’s architecture and has curb appeal, it is time to choose someone to install your garage door. Deal only with reputable companies or shops that specialize in garage door installation. This is a tricky job. It the garage door is not measured and installed properly, it will affect its operation.
Often installation specialists will guarantee their work for several years. This is a bonus.
A garage door, like an entry door gives a first impression of your home. With careful research and good choices it will be a favorable one!
